Introduction to Rideau Arcott Sheep
Rideau Arcotts were developed at the Animal Research Centre in Ottawa (ARCOTT) in the 1980's. Using several breeds including Finnish Landrace, Suffolk, Dorset, Shropshire, and East Friesen, allowed for improved maternal characteristics. These characteristics include high prolificacy, excellent mothering ability, increased milk production, extended lambing season (July-March), and the ability to breed out of season. They excel in crossbreeding programs with terminal sire breeds which emphasize meat production.
Our ewes average 250-300% lambing. We love this truly Canadian breed!
